Traditionally, IT projects are treated individually - for example, a data storage project would be implemented with no thought to the data network. This has evolved so that different teams look after different sections of the infrastructure, working in a silo fashion, ultimately resulting in a sub-optimal design at a higher operational cost. With pressure increasing for IT departments to reduce cost and simultaneously deliver a 'service oriented infrastructure' at high intensity with application provisioning on a just-in-time basis, organisations are being forced to re-evaluate the way in which data centres are designed.
